Foreign Minister Valtonen to visit London; Finland and the United Kingdom to sign declaration on strategic partnership on 20 May 2024

Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen will visit London on 20 May 2024. During her visit, Foreign Minister Valtonen will meet the United Kingdom's Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs David Cameron, and the ministers will sign a declaration on a strategic partnership between Finland and the United Kingdom (the UK).

“A strategic partnership will strengthen Finland’s and the UK’s broad-based cooperation founded on shared interests and values. It is important for us to intensify cooperation in the area of security and defence, but in other areas as well,” says Minister for Foreign Affairs Valtonen.

The UK is an important and close partner for Finland. The strategic partnership between Finland and the UK will deepen and promote multi-sector cooperation in many areas, including global and multilateral issues, the economy, migration, security and defence, energy, environmental and climate issues, research and education, and science, innovation and technology.

In addition to bilateral issues between the two countries, the ministers will discuss support for Ukraine, the far-reaching effects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on the security situation in Europe, and the situation in Gaza.
