Social security for Nepali children and families has improved
Although social security is a fundamental right in Nepal, a lack of information and complex systems have made it difficult for Nepali people to access benefits.
Save the Children in Finland has been working with the Government of Nepal to develop the country’s social security system. The goal is to streamline the social security system, expand its coverage, simplify the process of applying for and receiving benefits, and focus on children in the families that receive support.
In 2023, a survey was conducted in 30 regions to identify all individuals eligible for social security provided by the Government of Nepal.
In cooperation with the local authorities, Save the Children helps families that are eligible for support and need it to access the benefits they deserve. In 2023, Save the Children helped 12,900 people gain access to social security. It also assisted families eligible for child and disability support in obtaining these benefits.
Background
The Government of Nepal has taken steps to promote a national social security system. In the 2015 constitutional reform, social security was established as a fundamental right. However, a lack of information and complicated systems have made it difficult for people to apply for and obtain benefits.
Impact of Finland's development cooperation
Save the Children has been supporting the development of social security in Nepal through development cooperation funds since 2011. In 2023, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland supported the project with EUR 400,000.
