Political Department

The Political Department is responsible for matters relating to:

  • Finland’s foreign and security policy in general and global political and security issues
  • The Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) of the European Union
  • The Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) of the European Union
  • The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and NATO-cooperation
  • Nordic security policy cooperation
  • Military crisis management and civilian crisis management
  • The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE)
  • The Council of Europe
  • Arms control, defence materiel export issues, defence materiel cooperation, and international export control cooperation
  • Disarmament and non-proliferation
  • Finnish state vessels and state aircraft licences
  • Human rights policy and general human rights and democracy issues
  • Coordination of UN issues and the UN General Assembly and Security Council
  • Global governance
  • Mediation issues
  • Preparation of international agreements and legislation concerning the tasks of the Department in cooperation with the Legal Service.
