Oinonen and Luostarinen appointed as Deputy Directors General

In its meeting on 23 August, the Government decided to appoint the following Deputy Directors General:

Pekka Oinonen Ambassador Pekka Oinonen was appointed to serve as Deputy Director General of the Legal Department as from 1 September 2007.

Oinonen joined the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1969. He is currently Counsellor for Foreign Affairs in the Ministry's Legal Department. He has held positions in the Administrative Department, the Department for Development Cooperation and the Department for External Economic Relations. From 1991 to 1996, he served as the Ministry's Inspector-General. Furthermore, from 1982 to 1985, Oinonen was employed as Senior Adviser at the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

Oinonen's diplomatic career includes postings to Moscow, San Francisco, and the Permanent Delegation of Finland to the OECD in Paris. He served as Ambassador to Sofia from 1990 to 1992, to Tallin from 1996 to 2001, and to Dublin from 2001 to 2005.

Päivi Luostarinen Ambassador Päivi Luostarinen was appointed to serve as Deputy Director General of the Department for the Americas and Asia as from 10 September 2007.

Luostarinen is currently Coordinator for UN Reforms in the Department for Global Affairs. Her career in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs began in 1981, and she has held positions in the Legal Department, the Political Department, the Administrative Department and the Department for External Economic Relations. From 2002 to 2005, Luostarinen served as Deputy Director General and Director General of the Department for the Americas and Asia, and from 2000 to 2001 as Deputy Director General of the Department for External Economic Relations. In the years from 1996 to 2000, she held the position of Deputy Director General of the EU Secretariat in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

Luostarinen's diplomatic career includes postings to the Permanent Mission of Finland to the United Nations in New York and Finland's Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels.

Luostarinen served as a cabinet member for Commissioner Erkki Liikanen in the European Commission in Brussels from 1995 to 1996. From 2005 to 2006, she was Chief Policy Adviser in the Confederation of Finnish Industries.
