Esko Hamilo appointed Under-Secretary of State
Friday 14 May - The President of the Republic appointed Counsellor of Foreign Affairs Esko Hamilo to serve as Under-Secretary of State of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs as from 1 August 2010.
Esko Hamilo has held the position of State Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs since 2007, serving as one of the Prime Minister’s Special Advisers.
Hamilo joined the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1971. In 2001-05, he served as Head of the Finnish Embassy in Paris. Prior to this position, he was Head of the Finnish Embassy in Canberra in 1996-2001. In the Ministry, Hamilo has worked as Deputy Director General of the Political Department, held a managerial position in the Department for External Economic Relations and worked as Adviser in the Department for the Americas and Asia. His diplomatic career also includes postings to the Finnish Embassies in Brussels and London. In Finland’s EU accession negotiations, Hamilo was a member of the delegation for negotiations and responsible for foreign and security policy.
