Report on development cooperation in the education sector

Finland’s competence in the education sector is of the highest standard around the world. This should also be more strongly reflected in the priorities and funding of development cooperation according to a report entitled “Stepping Up Finland’s Global Role in Education” .

An increasingly larger number of children in developing countries have had the opportunity to attend school over the past few decades. However, the learning outcomes remain so poor that international operators in the development sector are talking about a global learning crisis.

Finland represents the opposite end of the spectrum: it has one of the most respected education systems in the world. The report on development cooperation in the education sector, entitled “Stepping Up Finland’s Global Role in Education”, recommends that Finland takes a more active role in addressing the learning crisis in developing countries.

The report was prepared as a commission of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs by Dr. Ritva Reinikka, Professor Hannele Niemi and Mr. Jukka Tulivuori.
