Revised VIS project

The Revised VIS project will improve the implementation of the common visa policy, consular cooperation and consultation between central visa authorities in accordance with the EU’s new amended VIS Regulation (VIS Recast). The project will not create its own information system; it is a funding project to develop technical functionalities conforming to the VIS Recast Regulation within the existing national visa information system.

Co-funded by the European Union

Project objectives

The aim of the Revised VIS project is that the new functionalities required by the VIS Recast Regulation will be efficiently implemented in the national VISA information system and the visa application process. Another aim is to create and test the necessary new integrations, to successfully complete the mandatory Compliance Tests (CT) and to adopt the solution in a controlled manner on schedule.

The Revised VIS development project implements the obligations under EU Regulations 2021/1133  and 2021/1134 , which are binding on the Member States. The solution developed within the project has to be introduced within the timeframes defined by eu-LISA, the European Union Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice.

Project implementers

The Immigration Process and System team in the Foreign Ministry’s Information Management sector implements the Revised VIS project together with the Ministry’s Visa Unit and the visa information system supplier. The project’s results will be reflected in the visa procedure as changed functions in the VISA national visa information system. The Project Manager for the Revised VIS project is Samuli Mustonen.

Funding

The Revised VIS project has been granted EUR 613,000,00 in funding through the EU’s Border Management and Visa Instrument (BMVI) for the period 1 January 2023–28 February 2025.

Timetable

The Revised VIS project has developed changes to the VISA national visa information system since 2023. The project will run until early 2025.

In October 2023, the EU’s Justice and Home Affairs Council endorsed a new roadmap and a new timeline, according to which all systems, components and functionalities laid down in the VIS Recast Regulation should be fully running by the end of 2026.

The EU will determine the timetable for the introduction of the information systems.
