Evaluation report: Midterm review of a sexual and reproductive health project in Somalia
The MIDA FinnSom V midterm review shows that the health sector project has improved the quality and availability of sexual and reproductive health-related services through experts engaged for the project. The project was implemented by IOM from 2022-2025 in Somaliland, continuing Finland’s long-standing support for Somalia’s health sector.
The project’s aim was to strengthen sexual and reproductive health and rights for women and girls through strengthening healthcare quality and institutional capacity. The evaluation found that deploying diaspora experts significantly improved the quality of healthcare through capacity building, including reducing maternal, neonatal and child mortality. Record-keeping and data management systems were strengthened across the targeted hospitals.
The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) contributed to improving the quality of antenatal care by producing a guidelines based on international standards. The ANC guideline being incorporated into the midwifery curriculum of the Hargeisa Institute of Health Sciences, improving sustainability.
