On the impacts of the EU referendum

The Embassy of Finland in London has been closely monitoring the EU referendum and the consequences of the outcome. Finland had hoped that the outcome of the referendum would support the UK’s continued EU membership, but we respect the result. The key issue for Finnish people living in the UK is economic uncertainty, which can be difficult to forecast at this moment.

The UK is still a full member of the EU, hence there are no immediate changes to the rights, obligations or movement of EU-citizens in the UK.

Once the UK has handed in the formal notice, negotiations on exit and the new relationship will commence. At this stage, it is too early to predict what the outcome of those negotiations would be.

Dual nationality

The embassy has received enquiries from Finnish and British citizens living in the UK regarding possible dual nationality and acquiring Finnish citizenship. Please find more information on the following web pages:

The website of the Finnish Immigration Service provides more information on the requirements for acquiring citizenship and on the application process.

The embassy monitors the rights of Finnish citizens in the UK. We respond to enquiries and, when needed, offer consular services to Finnish citizens as usual. Travel advice (in Finnish) can be found on the following webpage:

We are happy to answer any questions you may have.
