Finland’s country image site ThisisFINLAND now available also in Arabic

Press Release 118/2016
15 June 2016

The Foreign Ministry’s ThisisFINLAND (finland.fi) site is now available in Arabic. Finland’s country image site ThisisFINLAND was completely renewed last autumn. From now on the site is produced in eight languages: in addition to English, the master language, the site is published in Russian, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese and Arabic.

“It is important for Finland, both economically and politically, to care about country image,” says Petra Theman, Director for Public Diplomacy at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

ThisisFINLAND provides a wide selection of articles covering Finnish society, habits, people, companies, culture and events. The national broadcaster YLE is responsible for the current newsfeed in English and Russian.

Around fifty articles from the extensive collection of articles on the ThisisFINLAND site were translated into Arabic. The first stories published in Arabic are all-time favourites of the site as well as stories recently published in other ThisisFINLAND languages. In the future, the Arabic site is updated at the same pace as the other language versions.

“We hope that the site will be useful, above all, in efforts to promote export and attract investments.  The first large-scale visit by journalists from Arab-speaking countries to Finland in May showed that, in particular, Finnish know-how in education, cleantech and health technology attracts interest in that region,” says Petra Theman.
