23 March 2016

President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö will attend the international Nuclear Security Summit in Washington on 31 March – 1 April. The summit will be hosted by Barack Obama, President of the United States.

The goal of the summit is to reinforce international cooperation to prevent nuclear terrorism. The actions of national authorities and the role of international and institutional actions to improving nuclear security will be discussed at the meeting. The summit will be attended by leaders of about 50 countries and international organisations.

Next week's summit will conclude a series of summits that began on the initiative of President Obama in Washington in 2010. Nuclear security summits have also been held in Soul in 2012 and in the Hague in 2014. Finland has contributed to this process since its very beginning.

In addition to working sessions and discussions, the programme of the summit in Washington will include a dinner hosted by President Obama at the White House. President Niinistö's programme also includes bilateral meetings and discussions with American researchers and representatives of think tanks.

President Niinistö will visit Washington again in May, as he will be making an official visit to the United States together with other Nordic leaders.
