The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland commissioned the Ex-Post Evaluation of the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project in Western Nepal (RWSSP-WN, 2008-2019) and the Final Evaluation of the Rural Village Water Resources Management Project (RVWRMP, 2006-2022). The evaluation covered all three phases of the RVWRMP and two phases of the RWSSP-WN. To date, the projects are the biggest Nepal-Finland bilateral water sector interventions and the third phase of RVWRMP being the biggest Finnish bilateral intervention.

The evaluation provided the Government of Finland and Nepal an external, independent and objective analysis and assessment of the projects – how they achieved the set objectives. In addition, the evaluation will serve possible future projects by providing important information regarding the lessons learned during the project phases. The evaluation found both projects to have good results, relevance, efficiency and to have good impact. Working with local governments was considered important for the success and integrating gender equality and social inclusion as a central part of the project design rather than as a separate component has been successful.
