Minister for Foreign Affairs Haavisto visits Afghanistan

Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto is visiting Afghanistan. During the visit, Foreign Minister Haavisto meets representatives of the Government of Afghanistan and the country’s leadership and partner organisations engaged in development cooperation with Finland as well as representatives of civil society organisations and the international community.

The main purpose of Foreign Minister Haavisto’s visit is to discuss Afghanistan's peace process, the upcoming international pledging conference, and bilateral and topical issues. The 2020 Afghanistan Conference to be held on 23–24 November will be co-hosted by Finland together with the Afghan Government and the United Nations. The aim of this pledging conference is to support Afghanistan's road towards sustainable development and peace.

A stable Afghanistan is in the interest of Finland and the whole Europe. Finland has participated in the stabilisation and development of Afghanistan since 2002 through military crisis management, civilian crisis management and development cooperation. For security reasons, we will provide more information about the visit afterwards.
