Ambassadors to meet virtually this year

The Heads of Finnish Missions abroad will convene for their annual meeting on 24-26 August. Exceptionally, the meeting will be held virtually because of the coronavirus pandemic. The meeting will discuss how the world looks like during and after the coronavirus and how Finland is able to succeed in the future. The participants will approach the theme by assessing Finland’s foreign and security policy environment, for example.

The programme also includes topical speeches by Government leaders and confidential discussions with the Ambassadors. The speakers addressing the Ambassadors virtually include President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö, Prime Minister Sanna Marin, Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto, Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Ville Skinnari, Minister for Nordic Cooperation and Equality Thomas Blomqvist and Minister of European Affairs and Ownership Steering Tytti Tuppurainen. Permanent State Secretary Matti Anttonen will chair and open the meeting.

“The first-ever virtual annual meeting of Heads of Mission shows that the Foreign Service is able to adapt to new situations. With the coronavirus situation hampering travel, the importance of Finland’s missions abroad has grown further. I look forward to the discussions,” says Permanent State Secretary Anttonen.

Public speeches held at the meeting will be streamed live. The webcast will be available on the  Foreign Ministry’s website and YouTube channel(Link to another website.). Video recordings and speeches will be available afterwards on the Foreign Ministry’s website.
