EU foreign ministers to discuss Russian aggression against Ukraine

Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto will attend the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg on Monday 11 April 2022. The main topics on the agenda will be Russian aggression against Ukraine and the new European strategy ‘Global Gateway’.

The EU foreign ministers will continue the discussion on Russian aggression against Ukraine. Finland strongly condemns Russian’s invasion and the atrocities that Russia’s armed forces have been reported to have committed in Ukraine. The perpetrators of war crimes and other serious offences must be held accountable for their actions. Finland considers the unity of the European Union important and responds to Russia’s actions as part of the EU.

The Foreign Affairs Council will also discuss the new European strategy ‘Global Gateway’. The aim of the strategy is to expand the EU’s connectivity policy to the global level and to boost the development of sustainable connections in the digital, energy and transport sectors. Through the Global Gateway, EU funding will be channelled to infrastructure projects worldwide. Finland considers that the EU has an important role in developing connections to a more sustainable direction.

The EU foreign ministers will also hold an informal exchange with the foreign ministers of Iceland and Norway. In addition, as current affairs the Foreign Affairs Council will discuss the situation in Mali and the Sahel, Western Balkans and Libya.
