WFP humanitarian aid
Description
Ministry for Foreign Affairs supports the WFP's operation in Afghanistan with 4 million euros in 2022. The UN estimates that more than half of Afghanistan's 40 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. In October 2022, the UN estimated that 4,63 billion USD will be needed to cover the dire humanitarian needs in Afghanistan during the next 12 months. The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan has been difficult for years. The reasons for this have been widespread and long-standing poverty, a difficult security situation, droughts and a coronavirus pandemic. The humanitarian crisis has worsened in August 2021 as the Taliban took power in the country. WFP estimates that more than 22 million people are in need of critical food aid during the winter. WFP will need $ 1,1 billion in the next six months to cover food aid needs and logistics. By increasing support for WFP, Finland aims to respond to the growing food insecurity in Afghanistan.
