FRC/IFRC Mozambique Idai cyclone emergency operation
Description
Central Mozambique has been devastated by the impact of Tropical Cyclone Idai. The full extent of the emergency is still not knovvn, but based on preliminary information more than 600’000 persons have been affected and are in need of humanitarian assistance (ACAPS 19.3.2019). The City of Beira, with a population of over half a million, has been largely destroyed. According to the government, at least 242 persons have died and 1’400 are injured. The death toll is expected to rise in the days ahead. Initial assessments carried out by the Red Cross and other humanitarian actors indicate severe immediate needs in shelter, health, WASH and protection. The Government of Mozambique has declared a State of national emergency and is seeking international support to respond to one of the vvorst disasters in its history. The Mozambique Red Cross (CVM) has been assisting the population since the onset with the support of International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The IFRC Emergency Appeal supports the CVM to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to 75’000 persons affected by the cyclone, in the sectors of health, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and shelter. Based on preliminary information, the operation will focus it’s interventions in the areas of Beira and Dondo. The Finnish Red Cross (FRC) will support the operation in form of funds to the operation, material in kind, delegate support and monitoring. It will also provide 200’000 euros of its own funds.
