FAO: Enhancing accuracy, accessibility and transparency of global forest resources data with technical innovations

The FAO project Enhancing accuracy, accessibility and transparency of global forest resources data with technical innovations – a focus on joining forces in Africa has as the ultimate objective to support the achievement of the forest related SDGs and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and objectives of the UN Strategic Plan for Forests and its Global Forest Goals. The project will contribute to halting deforestation and forest degradation through promotion and enabling of sustainable management and use of forests with increased economic, social and environmental benefits. This contribution will be achieved through extensive capacity development, with a focus on Africa, and provision of tools and techniques that allow countries to collect and analyse up-to-date information on their forest resources as well as report on them to the national and international process and conventions in a transparent manner and on annual basis. All capacity development activities will promote full and equal participation of women. Hence, the international and national decision-making processes will be better supported by improved, transparent and accessible information on forest resources and their changes. Data and tools for their collection and analysis will be made available through easy-to-use interfaces which will make them accessible also for non-technical users, such as high-level policy formulators and decision-makers. Finally, the capacity development activities will be done in a participatory manner, emphasizing open and equal access to the training events, tools and material for everyone. Finland’s contribution for the year 2021 is two million euros.
