IDA-20 (The Twentieth Replenishment of the International Development Association, IDA)

Description

The International Development Association (IDA) is the part of the World Bank that helps the world’s poorest countries by providing grants and concessional loans. IDA promotes sustainable development and the reduction of poverty and inequality worldwide. IDA is an important partner for Finland in the implementation of Finland's development policy goals. IDA focuses on the rights and position of women and girls and persons with disabilities, as well as on combating climate change and adapting to it. IDA also supports job creation, livelihoods and better wellbeing in developing countries as well as stronger governance and tax collection capacity. The IDA-20 replenishment process was brought forward to help the world’s poorest countries affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. IDA has helped developing countries strengthen their pandemic response to COVID-19 to protect the poor and vulnerable, including reinforcing health systems, strengthening laboratory capacity and delivering vaccination campaigns. The IDA-20 focus themes Climate Change, Fragility, Conflict and Violence, Gender and Development, Human Capital and Jobs and Economic Transformation are in line with the UN SDGs and Finland's development objectives. The four cross-cutting issues chosen for IDA-20 replenishment are Crisis Preparedness, Governance and Institutions, Debt sustainability and Technology. At the final IDA20 replenishment meeting hosted by Japan in December 2021 development partners agreed on a historic USD 93 billion financing package to help low-income countries respond to the COVID-19 crisis and build a greener, more resilient, and inclusive future. Development cooperation funds account for about USD 24 billion of the total funding, while the rest of the financing package consists of developing countries’ repayments of previous loans, as well as market financing. Finland will contribute EUR 125 million to IDA-20 replenishment.
