Humanitarian assistance; UNHCR; Covid-19 Situation (Horn of Africa)


Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland supports UNHCR's Covid-19 Situation (earmarked to Horn of Africa) with 3 million euros. There are over 4.8 refugees and asylum seekers in the Horn of Africa (as well as in Eastern Africa and Great Lakes region) and over 10.5 million internally displaced persons. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the region. By the end of September 2021, more than 7.700 confirmed coronavirus infections had been contracted among refugees and internally displaced persons. Over 17.500 refugees have received at least one vaccine dose in the area. As a result of COVID-19, UNHCR has provided direct additional support for the organization’s operations. UNHCR has also built premises suitable for quarantine. UNHCR works closely with governments and partners and coordinates aid measures.
