UN Women Women, Peace and Security in the Arab States - Phase II
Description
Finland has supported UN Women's "Women, Peace and Security" program in North Africa and the Middle East since 2016. UN Women's programme bolsters implementation capacity on UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security and ensures that the needs and priorities of women and girls affected by conflicts are met and addressed. At the institutional level, the programme supports the effective resourcing, monitoring and implementation of four National Action Plans (Tunisia, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq) and one regional action plan (the Arab League). At the community level, the programme implements effective strategies to prevent violent extremism and build community cohesion. At the individual level, women and girls are supported through protection services. With additional funding, Finland's overall contribution stands approximately at EUR 5,500,000. The programme has achieved clear demonstrated results. The results include the development and passage of the first National Action Plans in Jordan,Tunisia and Lebanon, and the second in Iraq. In addition, the implementation of the National Action Plans on women, peace and security has been supported in all project countries as well as the regional plan of the League of Arab States. These are huge accomplishment in a region with only one National Action Plan on 1325 at the time of the inception of the first phase of the programme.
