WFP humanitarian aid
Description
The UN estimates that more than half of Afghanistan's 40 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. The UN emergency appeal in September 2021 estimated the need for humanitarian aid in Afghanistan at around € 1.3 billion. The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan has been difficult for years. The reasons for this have been widespread and long-standing poverty, a difficult security situation, a drought and a coronavirus pandemic. The humanitarian crisis has worsened since mid-August as the Taliban took power in the country. WFP estimates that 22.8 million people are in need of critical food aid during the winter. WFP will need $ 230 million by the end of this year to cover food aid needs and logistics. By increasing support for WFP, Finland aims to respond to the growing food insecurity in Afghanistan.
