Humanitarian Assistance; UNHCR; support to UNHCR's activities in Iran and to acute needs in Afghanistan
Description
Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland supports UNHCR’s Afghanistan Situation and especially UNHCR’s operation in Iran with 3 million euros. OCHA estimates that nearly half of Afghanistan’s population (around 18.4 million) are currently in need of life-saving humanitarian assistance. The humanitarian situation in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has dramatically worsened during the current armed conflict. Increasing violence and insecurity have resulted in the internal displacement of some 390,000 people during the first seven and a half months of 2021. Afghanistan began year 2021 with around 2.9 million of its population displaced due to the conflict within the country and almost 2.6 million registered abroad as refugees, 85 per cent of whom are in the Islamic Republics of Iran and Pakistan. According to some sources, some 5,000 people are arriving to Iran per day. UNHCR provides protection to the refugees, and coordinates refugee camps and provides non-food items. UNHCR’s Afghanistan Situation Supplementary Appeal for July-December 2021 is 62.8 million dollars.
