Trade for Decent Work
Description
International Labour Organizations (ILO) is UN specialized organization focusing on labour rights. Governments, employers and workers are represented in the ILO's tripartite system. ILO drafts international labour standards. As States ratify ILO's Conventions they commit to implement labour standards nationally. Poorer developing countries have challenges implementing and enforcing labour standards. The project will be implemented in five African partner countries: Cabo Verde, Côte D'Ivore, Ghana, Madagaskar, Mozambique. The project is part of a larger programme of the ILO and the European Commission where also countries from Asia and Latin America are included. The objective of the project is to support implementation of labour rights in partner countries. Special priority areas in the project are implementation of ILO's core Conventions, prevention of child and forced labour, equality at work, responsible business conduct and green economy. Development policy priority area is 2: Developing countries’ own economies have generated more jobs, livelihood opportunities and wellbeing. The project contributes primarily to the Sustainable Development Goal 8 and its targets 8.8, 8.7, 8.5 and 8.a.1. According to the preliminary estimate the project is human rights progressive. Beneficiaries of the project are government officials, trade unions and the private sector in partner countries. The right-holders of the project are workers, especially children and women in the partner countries. The grant is provided to an inter-governmental organization, the ILO. The project is originally part of a larger program designed by the European Commission and the ILO. After Finland joins the project its African component will be a joint project by the Commission, ILO and Finland.
