Consolidating Institutional Capacities for National Surface Water Quality Monitoring in the Kyrgyz Republic, FinWaterWEI III
Description
Since 2009, the Finnish Environment Institute has been implementing Finnish-funded development cooperation projects in Central Asian countries. The ICI project “Consolidating Institutional Capacities for National Surface Water Quality Monitoring in the Kyrgyz Republic” is a continuation of the FinWater WEI (Wider European Initiative), Programme for Finland´s Water Sector Support. Phase I of the program was be implemented between 2009 and 2013 in 11 different countries in Eastern Europe, the Southern Caucasus and Central Asia, and phase II in the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan in 2014-2019. The programme has supported the sustainable and equitable management of water resources. Through the programme, the environmental sustainability, availability of clean drinking water and sanitation have been supported. The ICI project will continue the work already commenced in the Kyrgyz Republic, with special focus in the monitoring of surface water quality. The project has a strong emphasis on capacity building of the institutions State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry (SAEPF) and Agency on Hydrometeorology (Kyrgyzhydromet) and ensures the sustainability of the results already achieved. With the help of this project, capacity of the institutions is strengthened, the field is modernized and the staff is trained. The project also promotes adapting to climate change. The budget of the project is 850 000 euros.
