UNHCR; humanitarian assistance to the South Sudan regional situation
The civil war in South Sudan has continued since 2013 despite several attempted ceasefires. The number of refugees increased in 2017 as one million people fled the country. This takes the total number of refugees to 2.4 million. In addition, there are 1.8 internally displaced persons (IDPs). South Sudan constitutes the world's second largest refugee crisis after Syria. Despite significant humanitarian needs the regional operation is among UNHCR's most underfunded.
