Improving the Adaptation to Climate Change by Enhancing Weather and Climate Services in Sudan - FERSAD
Description
Sudan is categorized as a Least Developed Coutnry (LDC) by the UN. The country is also one of the most vulnerable to climate change because of the issue of food security. Despite recent large investments in the hydro-meteorogical infrastructure, there is room for significant improvement in the management of the modernized infrastructure as well as in weather forecasting and warning capabilities. The FERSAD continues the cooperation between the Finnish Meteorogical Institute (FMI) and the Sudanese Meteorogical Authority (SMA), which began in 2011. To date, the partners have carried out two separate projects of which the latter was concluded in April 2019. In both of the previous projects, extensive capacity building of SMA's personnel, especially in the areas of weather forecasting and data management, were implemented. The FERSAD project will contribute directly to the Finnish development policy priority area number four and its outcome 3 (meteorology and disaster risk reduction).
