Support to WFP operations in the Central Sahel region (Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger)
Description
Situation across the Central Sahel Region (Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger) deteriorated in 2019. Over 20 million people live amidst conflict. There are nearly one million refugees and IDPs in the region. Conflict and insecurity interlinked to displacement and climate change are further risking the food security in an already vulnerable situation. The World Food Programme WFP is currently reaching more than 4 million people with life-saving food assistance. Funding situation is however critical: Funding needs of WFP are 479 million USD for 2020 out of which only 27 percent have been secured. In September 2019, WFP elevated the response of the Central Sahel situation to the highest Level 3 Emergency Response, together with five other situations (Yemen, South Sudan, North-East Nigeria, Syria and Democratic Republic of the Congo). Ministry for Foreign Affairs provides funding for the operation 3 000 000 euros.
