Afghanistan Conference in November 2020

Description

Minister level Afghanistan pledging conference is organized in every fourth year. Conference was held in 2012 in Tokyo and in 2016 in Brussels. Finland will be organizing 2020 conference in November in Geneva together with the government of Afghanistan and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). Previous international commitments will end by the end of 2020 and this effects on the occasion of the conference. The decisions to continue the financing are necessary. In 2020 minister level conference the goal is to commit the international community as well as the Afghan government to mutual objectives to coordinate the development cooperation in Afghanistan during the years 2021 – 2024. Stabilizing the country is the important goal of the international community and this goal would be jeopardized without mutual development efforts. Conference has a central foreign policy dimension, but the possible peace negotiations will be held in another track. Close partners of Finland, the UN and the government of Afghanistan support Finland being a co-host of the conference. With the help of the conference, Finland implements the activities and policies affecting directly to the root causes of migration.
