Support to the IGAD Taskforce on the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden


Finland supports an initative of IGAD to improve maritime security in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden by strengthening regional cooperation through the establishment of a regional platform on the issues of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, and a task force for it. The first special objective of the project is that national maritime authorities efficiently communicate their opportunities, chanllenges and risks associated to the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The second special objective is that awareness, dialogue and coordination on the IGAD Red Sea and Gulf of Aden initiative is strengthened. IGAD makes use of CMI's expertize and support in the project. In a consultative process by the task force the project implements through diplomatic means peace building that is one of Finnish foreign policy priorities. Maritime security amd conflict prevention are preconditions for development of the countries in the region and for regional integration thata are basic objectives of IGAD in accordance with its mandate. Finland's one-time contribution to the IGAD project is 100.000 euros in 2019 - 2020. The support lasts until the end of the first quarter of 2020. Norway is another donor in the project. Finland's support will be channelled as a discretionary government transfer to CMI on the basis of the project plan by IGAD.
