Description
UNICEF WASH-Programme (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) in Afghanistan aims to enhance the access and use of improved drinking water supply and sanitation facilities. It promotes also hygiene behavior. Polluted water is the main reason of mortality rate of small children. 25 % of children die before their fifth birthday. One sixth of rural populations live still without decent sanitation. Geographical variation between cities and rural areas is high. By 2021 UNICEF WASH-Programme has the following goals: 0.28 million people have improved drinking water and 0.63 million people have access to sanitation. 100 schools and 100 health clinics have appropriate water and sanitation facilities. WASH also contributes to children’s, especially girl’s school attendance and hygiene level. The UNICEF WASH-budget for 2020-21 is 25 million dollars. Finland’s contribution in 2020-21 is 3 million Euros. Other WASH donors are: USA, South Korea and Germany. In 2018 almost 200,000 people were provided an access to improved drinking water. More than half a million people received sanitation facilities. Additionally 15,000 students were beneficiaries.
