Core Support to UN Women Afghanistan


Important advances in gender equality and women's empowerment have been made in Afghanistan over the past 18 years. These advances have enabled greater promotion and protection of women's and girls human rights, increased the possibilities in participation and many discriminatory laws have been reformed. However, women and girls face widespread discrimination. There are challenges in the implementation of law reforms, there are obstacles in the girls access to school, women human rights defenders and women participating in political disicion making or who are in leadership position face dangers. Gender based violence remains deeply rooted. UN Women Afghanistan Country Programme 2019 - 2022 is reflects the programmatic and strategic priorities of UN Women. At the country level UN Women Afghanistan has 4 thematical focus areas: 1) Women's Political Participation and Leadership, 2) Women's Economic Empowerment, 3) Ending Violence Against Women and 4) Women, Peace and Security. UN Women Afghanistan enhaces the capacity of different stakeholders, implements normative work and strengthens the humanitarian work of different actors in gender issues. UN Women cooperates widely with different stakeholders: several local ministries, civil society, academia, media and other UN actors. Finland supports according to development policy priorities the implementation of the UN Women Afghanistan Country Strategy 2020 - 2022 with 6 million €. Finland emphasizes in policy influencing work particularly women, peace and security pilar and as a part of it the implementation of 1325 national action plan. Finland focuses its policy work to rights of disabled women and girls. The core support to UNW Afghanistan contributes especially to the development policy priority number 1: The rights and status of women and girls. It also contributes to the priority number 2: The growth of developing countries' economies to generate more jobs, livelihoods and well-being and number 3: Democratic and better-functioning societies.
