Support for resilience of people of Burundi
Description
Burundi is one of the poorest countries in the world ranking 184th out of 188 countries in the Human DevelopmentIndex. Severe food insecurity, wide spread malnutrition and lack of basic services are some of the problems thecountry is facing. Chronic malnutrition among Burundian children is the highest in the world. One in threeBurundians is affected by food shortages, malnutrition or epidemics. There is a worsening food situation withdecreased agricultural production. Moreover, recent heavy floods destroyed people's crops and livelihoods, andhas displaced thousands of families. The political and socio-economic crisis that resulted from the contestedpresidential elections in 2015 prompted a mass exodus. This three-year project funded by the DG DEVCO and lead by the Spanish Red Cross is aiming to improve foodsecurity, prevent and treat malnutrition and preserve social cohesion. The Spanish Red Cross is responsibleWASH, food security and livelihoods and the Finnish Red Cross is coordinating nutrition and social cohesion(including DRR and SGBV) components. The project will be implemented by the Burundi Red Cross in southernprovinces of Burundi in Makamba, Bururi, Rumonge and Rutana. The Red Cross consortium is part of a larger DGDEVCO funded TUBEHONEZA ("Live Well") programme lead by the FAO, consisting of UN organizations andNGOs.
