The Network of Religious and Traditional Peacemakers

Finn Church Aid (FCA) is conducting a project of the network of religious and traditional peacemakers, that was established in 2013 after consultations with the UN and other stakeholders. FCA was appointed as an interim secretariat of the network to carry out and/or coordinate its activities. The secretariat of the network is located in Helsinki, but the scope of the network is global. The project is effected in close cooperation with the UN. The objective is to improve the effectiveness and sustainability of mediation efforts through strengthening local ownership and supporting the positive role of religious and traditional leaders in mediation. It was decided that the network’s activities include: i) assignments by the UN Mediation Support Unit to consult, mobilize and facilitate contacts with the religious and traditional leaders and carry out baseline assessments, ii) task forces with thematic focuses, iii) trainings for Track 1 actors and religious and traditional leaders, and iv) global annual meeting. The project supports the capacity building of local actors and citizens in developing countries and strengthens their role in their own development. The project includes gender equality objectives in a cross-cutting manner. The budget for the year 2014 is 640 000 €, of which FCA covers 100 000 €. The secretariat of the network prepares the budget for 2015 and 2016.
