Finn Church Aid/Providing access to justice and gender sensitive legal awareness at grass roots level in Liberia


The overall objective of the action is to contribute to the development of local legislation and support the respect of the fundamental human rights of the most vulnerable prisoners in Liberia. The specific objective of the action is to improve the access of the prisoners, especially women and youth, to justice through enhanced local capacities to provide gender sensitive legal support and protection of prisoner’s rights, in three targeted prisons in Lofa, Bong and Nimba counties. The action will enhance the stakeholders’ knowledge of rule of law and international human rights standards, increase provision of legal assistance, strengthen co-operation and information sharing between stakeholders, and improve attitudes and practices towards vulnerable detainees through awareness raising and advocacy activities. The project will work with the rights-holders, duty bearers and other stakeholders at individual, community and institutional level. The direct beneficiaries of the action include 430 detainees, 15 religious leaders, 109 police and prisons’ personnel, 12 legal practitioners and 45 community leaders. The total number of direct beneficiaries is 611. Awareness raising activities in the targeted counties will reach 210 000 people.
