UN Alliance of Civilizations; Trainings of Somali Journalists/ Civil servants in collaboration with VIKES


UN Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) will collaborate with VIKES on trainings of journalists together with the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) and other local organizations in Somalia; Somali Women Journalists (SWJ), Somali Female Media Organization (SOFEM), the Somali Ministry of Information (MoL) and Somali National Television (SNTV). According to the DAC definition Somalia belongs to the least developed countries in the world. The project is part of the VIKES project which is engaged in a multiyear project to train and build the capacity of journalists in Somalia. The overall objective of this project is to contribute to the peaceful development of Somalia towards the constitutionally governed democratic state and to enhance the citizens' access to information by enhancing the journalists' professional skills and working conditions. The objective of the project is specifically to train journalists in independent investigative journalism, media ethics and safety measures. Also, authorities will be provided with training in Somalia, the pending media law, and in general freedom of expression and access to information on the importance of society through representative as well as the status of female journalists. With its extensive experience in trainings of media professionals UNAOC will provide training modules to complement VIKES trainers on the topics of cross-cultural relations, interconfessional tensions and intergenerational trauma. The beneficiaries of the project are the somali journalists especially the female journalists, and the civil servants taking part in the training. The beneficiaries of this project is also the general public using the relevant media. The opportunities to participate in developing the society and in decision making will be improved by improving the quality and the relevance of information and access to information
