Empowerment of Aymara-women in the Bolivian Altiplano (continuation)

Our primary objective is to empower women in four Aymara communities. We plan to legally establish four organizations for these women, which will provide them with influence in matters of local administration and enable them to obtain funds for their projects. Machismo is a major problem in the Aymara ethnic group, to which most of our beneficiaries belong. Men typically subjugate women at home, often through physical violence, and fail to recognize their work for the family and the community. Many of the women do not speak or read Spanish fluently. During the first phase of the project, we organized courses on a variety of farming techniques. The main goal was to secure income for the women and strengthen their social position. We also organized courses on human rights and gender equality for both women and men. Finally, diplomas were awarded to the women at an event where community authorities publicly recognized them for their technical skills. In this second phase of the project, our goals are: 1. To strengthen the three women’s organizations that were created during the first phase of the project and establish a fourth one in a new community. 2. To register these organizations as legal entities through which the women can present projects, request funding for the projects and take part in their communities' decision-making processes. 3. To provide training and competencies so that the organizations can independently prepare their own projects, define their needs and desires, present them to the community, and so on. 4. To continue the vocational training in agriculture and food processing in order to further increase the women’s income and improve their social status.
