Development of a Coordinated and Integrated Permitting System

The aim of the ICI Project by Department for Environmental Affairs (DEA) in South Africa and the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) is to improve DEA' s capacity to harmonise and integrate environmental permitting processes and to develop a co-ordinated and integrated permitting system. As a result, the number of different environmental processes will be reduced and the service delivery of DEA enhanced by providing a single entry and exit point for all environmental permit applications. In the long term, this is expected to enhance environmental protection and to ensure environmentally acceptable economic development. The project may also have indirect impacts on poverty reduction by streamlining the permitting processes for investments in economic development. The final beneficiaries are the South African environmental permit applicants whose service will be improved.
