Innovations for Development programme

"BEAM - Business with Impact" is a joint innovations-for-development program between the MFA Finland and the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology (Tekes) which supports development of innovations, information and knowledge by companies, civil society organizations, educational and research institutes and other organizations with the objective of improving poor people's welfare in developing countries. Support is channeled to the development, piloting and commercialization of new products, services, business and cooperation models, technologies, solutions or social innovations. The program will neither support the companies' exports, conventional business partnerships nor regular development cooperation projects by CSOs. The BEAM program benefits the poor people in developing countries whose lives are improved due to new innovations. Innovative business benefits also companies and the public sector in developing countries and Finland by creating new jobs, opportunities for entrepreneurship and financial resources such as private investment and tax revenue. Innovations improve the competitiveness of the economies and foster socially sustainable, green growth in developing countries and Finland. The primary long-term objective of the program is to advance economic development and people's welfare in developing countries. The BEAM program links companies and other organizations to existing future watch and market watch services, advisory and business services -- especially with the focus on low-income people's BOP (base of the pyramid) markets --, and other support and development services, such as business acceleration and service platforms as well as corporate social responsibility and human rights training services. The five-year program is established in Tekes. The joint public funding comes from Tekes and MFA to the amount of 50% both. MFA will delegate its contribution to Tekes's procedures. The program will be operational as of at the beginning of 2015.
