Support to the implementation of UN Women's country strategy for Kenya

Finland supports gender equality in Kenya by means of supporting the implementation of UN Women's country strategy for Kenya that contributes to the equality and well-being of the Kenyan society. It has five key result areas: Women lead and participate in governance; Economically empowered women and youth benefit from public procurement and agriculture and extractive industries value chains; Women and girls living a life free from violence; Peace, security and humanitarian action are shaped by women's leadership and participation; and National and devolved planning fully reflect accountability for gender equality commitments and priorities. The strategy is informed by the lessions learned and consultations with representatives from ministries, UN agencies, women's human rights organisations, non-govenmental organisations, development partners and the private sector, and it contributes to Kenya's national development priorities. Finland has supported the implementation of UN Women's country strategy with 1,7 million EUR in 2013. UN Women promoted the participation of women in the electoral process in 2013 and contributed to the prevention of violence and harassment of women during the elections. After the elections UN Women has contributed to the restructuring of government machinery as regards to gender equality. UN Women has also participated in the preparation of Kenya's Second Medium Term Plan (2013-2017) as regards to gender equality. Kenya has a national Action Plan for UN Security Council Resolution 1325 "Women, Peace and Security) but its implementation has not started yet.
