WHO, 8th Global Conference on Health Promotion in Helsinki 10-14 June 2013, support for participants from Least Developed Countries


Finland in hosting the 8th WHO Global Conference on health promotion in Helsinki 10 - 14 June 2013. The aim of the Conference is to promoto cross-sectional cooperation for health promotion in accordance with the health in all policies -principle. Themes to be discussed are e.g. the role of health promotion in the advancement of the MDG's and in the Post-2015 framework and sustainable development. The Conference is will be opened by President Sauli Niinistö and WHO Director General Margaret Chan. Other speakers include Minister Hautala and former President Halonen. Aroun 700-800 people are expected to attend from member states, international organizations and finance institutions, public and private sector and NGO's from all over the world. Due to the substance goals set for the Conference it is vital to ensure the participation of as many cuntries as possible. Participation from the least developed countries is only possible by supporting the travel costs of the delegations. This funding will be used to cover part of these costs. Ministry of Social Affairs and Health is the national counterpart to WHO. MFA has supported the Conference preparations before by financing the participation from LDC's to the preparations with 127 139 e and publishing of book "Health in all Policies" that is published during the Conference with 42 000 e. The MFA has also taken part in the Conference Organising Committee led by the WHO and also in the work of a thematic group linked to the Conference. This additional funding is proposed in a situation where the WHO has not been able to secure the needed funds. The gap was found out about in a very late phase.
