Development Aid in Mazar-e-Sharif

Finland has supported the development of Northern Afghanistan since 2008. By carrying out development projects in Northern Afghanistan, Finland implements the Government White Paper to Parliament of 12 December 2011, according to which some 25% of Finnish aid will continue to be targeted to the northern areas of the country where Finland has participated in military and civilian crisis management. Projects supported by Finland promote cross-cutting themes of gender equality and human rights. The projects presented here have a special focus on education for girls and children with disabilities, women's rights, and the rule of law. This year's package will provide funding for the following projects: - UNICEF’s WASH project (500 000 Euros) addresses water and sanitation issues and promotes good hygienic practices at schools in Northern Afghanistan. The project improves the level of hygiene at schools as well as children's school attendance. - Afghan Subnational Governance Programme (ASGP) implemented by UNDP (1 million Euros) strengthens effective subnational governance that promotes public participation. The programme supports rule of law and sustainable development in Afghanistan. - The Swedish Committee for Afghanistan's project Inclusive Education in Rural Communities (400 000 Euros) aims to improve basic education opportunities in rural areas of Northern Afghanistan. The project will improve the overall coverage of children's education by including girls and children with disabilities in basic education. - GIZ's (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) project Improving Justice for Women (500 000 Euros) improves women's rights and participation in the legal sector, and strengthens rule of law and women's awareness of their basic legal rights. - AAN (Afghanistan Analysts Network) aims to develop Afghanistan's capacity to produce relevant research data. With Finland's 200 000 Euro support, the organization will continue to produce conflict-sensitive, human rights-based research and key analyses for the future of Afghanistan, including decision-making and the international community's planning of activities.
