Westbury Youth Development Initiative

Youth are in a central role in developing their communities and societies as well as in poverty reduction. In South Africa youth’s challenges are multiple. The cooperation of different actors of the society is needed to tackle the challenges in youth development. Considering this, the overall objective of the Project is to promote youth development and participation in South Africa and enhance the cooperation of the actors working with youth development issues. 700 youth are reached directly during the three years of the project in Westbury, one of the most disadvantaged suburbs in Johannesburg, and in the surrounding West Rand area. The project objective is reached through the following project components: 1. Two targeted programs for disadvantaged youth: Khulisa (100 youth): contributing to youth’s life skills change, promoting youth employment and strengthening youth’s social activism and awareness raising on youth issues and life skills in the schools. Work in Progress/ Students for Humanity (600 youth): capacitating disadvantaged youth by developing their life skills and employment skills, and engaging youth to community actions and advocacy/awareness raising through media skills. 2. Building a strategic alliance and enhancing networking of local actors working with youth issues (NGO’s, public sector institutions, Westbury community, youth, private sector, other relevant stakeholders) through Social Transformation System-model which has been developed to facilitate greater social impact in vulnerable communities, guiding the stakeholder collaborations, and act as a monitoring and evaluation tool. 3. Enabling the sustainability of the project and the continuity of the local actions by repairing a local Westbury Secondary School Hostel for a Youth Center for the use of youth, local NGOs and other actors of the community.
