Humanitarian assistance through WFP to the Syria crisis incl. the response in Syria and the region
Description
Support, a total of 1 080 351 euro, to WFP Syria crisis operations, both in Syria and regionally. World Food Programme (WFP) is the UN programme for food assistance and has a central role in all humanitarian crises globally and is one of largest channels of Finnish humanitarian funding. The Syrian humanitarian crisis affects a growing number of the country's 21.4 million population. In the beginning of October 2013 the number of Syrian refugees amounted to 2.1 million and 4.25 million people were internally displaced in Syria. Approximately half of the refugees and people in need are children. The total need of humanitarian assistance, including the Syria Humanitarian Assistance Response Plan (SHARP) and the Syria Regional Refugee Response Plan (RRP), is 4.4 billion USD, which is about one third of the global humanitarian needs in 2013 and the largest UN appeal in history. WFP's share of the appeals is a total of 1.132 billion USD, i.e. approximately a quarter of the total appeal. WFP's operation inside Syria reaches about 3 million people in need per month and the WFP regional operation has approximately 2.6 million beneficiaries.
