Support for the Mercury Trust Fund for preparing the Minamata Treaty

A global and legally binding treaty for restraining mercury emmissions has been negotiated intergovernmentally since 2009. The negotiating committee has prepared an agreement that aims to protect human health and the environment from mercury emmissions that arise from human activities, and the so called Minamata Treaty is supposed to be signed in October 2013. After the Treaty has come into force, it's implementation will be financed by the GEF and by establishing a specific international Programme to support capacity building and technical assistance. In the meantime, a temporary UNEP Trust Fund will support the preparation of the Treaty and developing countries' ratification of the Treaty.
