Support to women's political participation in Tanzania 2nd phase

The main objective of the project is to promote women's rights especially in regard to societal equality and political empowerment. The means to reach this goal are i.a. legislative reforms, strengthening the participation of women and youth within the parties as well as in election processes, influencing general opinion among the leaders of the local communities and religious organisations as well as media. Finland's support is core support for the project and it includes support to hire technical staff (3.9 million euros). Project runs from 2017 until 2020, over the elections. Total budget of the project is roughly 9 million euros. Finland decided to continue to second phase of the project after evaluating and validating the results of the earlier phase: nearly 2000 aspirants were trained and many legal framework processes were put forward. Electoral commissions and party registrars offices were trained in gender issues. They also wrote their own gender policies. Female candidates, aspirants and members of parliament were increased in number and this trend is hoped to be continued with the phase 2 programme. Finnish support to the earlier phase was 1,5 million euros in 2 years’ time.
