LISTEN, LEARN and LIVERights-based approach empowering families for sustainable livelihood and well-being


The project aims to contribute to the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, promote gender equality and empowerment of women and to environmental sustainability. The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the eradication of extreme poverty, hunger and violation of human rights in Nakawa Division of Kampala and parts of Wakiso District in Uganda.The project will take into account the following cross-cutting development policy objectives:Gender equality.Human rights: to promote the rights of vulnerable community members (women, children, people with disabilities, people living with HIV, etc.).To promote practices that contribute to sustainable use of resources and thus reducing harmful effects on the environment. The final beneficiaries will be 450 households in Nakawa Division of Kampala and parts of Wakiso District. The households represent around 3,000 people. Another 2,000 youths and children as well as 250 community leaders will be targeted as the final beneficiaries. These are the most vulnerable in the community, widows, single mothers, the elderly, people living with HIV, people with disabilities, etc.The key project activities:Training entrepreneurial skills to family members. Training households in Village Savings and Loan Associations.Assist in establishing businesses that are screened, monitored and evaluated.Sign MoUs with local microfinance institutions to provide credit to beneficiaries.Train members of households in health, nutrition and hygiene.Provide psychosocial support to families.Facilitate appropriate referrals for members of the community to access medical care.Provision of equipment for people with disabilities.Conduct adult literacy classes.Train school children in life skills.Support primary and secondary school children in the formation of peer support groups.Distribution of Information Education and Communication materials (IEC) to youths.Provide scholastic materials and pay school fees for school going orphans, vulnerable children and youths.Organize and hold recreation and sports events for children and youths.Sensitize community on environmental issues.Sensitize members of households about appropriate housing.
