Unfpa Unicef Joint Programme on the abandonment of Female Genital Mutilation

The objective of the Joint Programme on the Abandonement of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting : Accelerating Change is to contribute to the acceleration of the total abandonement of FGM/C in the next generation. It is a joint programme of Unicef/Unfpa. FGM/C represents an extreme violation of the human rights of women and children, a danger to to sexual and reproductive health, and a form of gender-based violence that must end. Unfpa and Unicef are administrating the programme both at international and national level. Country programmes are done in collaboration with authorities and relevant international organisations and CSOs. In the steering committee also donors to the programme are present. The beneficiaries of the programme are girls and women in the programme countries and indirectly their future children. The programme aims at a positive institutional and social change through achieving an enhanced policy environment for FGM/C elimination, increased use of quality services and increased acceptance of elimination of the norm of FGM/C. The evaluation of the programme in 2013 was mainly very positive and pointed to the catalytic effects of the programme both internationally and at country level. The programme started in 2008 and the second phase of the programme is 2014-2017. During the II phase, the regional context will be used more efficiently including AU and the capacity of the regional offices of Unfpa and Unicef as comes to regional analyses, support to national programmes and identifying expertise. Phase II will work in 17 African countries, regionally and globally.
