Natural Forest Protection
Description
The project aims at developing a method to protect natural forests in Madagaskar, where deforestation and forest fragmentation are problems. Forest restoration and creation of buffer zones by planting trees which provide food and wood for local people are started in the pilot phase and continued in the project. Alternative methods of local agriculture are also introduced. In the project, the purpose is to develop a forest monitoring system utilising remote sensing, which results in interactive, updating internet-based maps. Local capacity in monitoring is improved. In the future, the results can be applied in REDD projects for instance.
