New Deputy Director General to the Department for Europe and new Director General to the Legal Service
The Government appointed on Thursday 23 August Olli Kantanen, Counsellor for Foreign Affairs and Head of the Embassy of Finland in Riga, to serve as Deputy Director General of the Department for Europe between 1 September 2018 and 31 August 2022.
Olli Kantanen will transfer to the Department for Europe from Riga where he has served as Head of Finland’s Embassy since 2014.
Before that he was Director of the Unit for Eastern Europe and Central Asia. He has held a number of different EU-related positions both at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and at the Embassy of Finland in Tallinn between 2001 and 2004 and in Berlin between 1997 and 2001.
Kantanen holds the degree of Master of Social Sciences.
The Government also appointed Senior Adviser for Legislative Affairs Kaija Suvanto, Master of Laws with court training, as Director General of the Legal Service for a fixed term starting on 1 October 2018 and ending on 31 August 2023.
Suvanto has worked at the Unit for EU and Treaty Law of the Legal Service since 2005.
She became Director of the Unit in 2009, and now she will transfer to the post of Director General of the Legal Service.
The Government also proposed that at the presidential session on 24 August, the President of the Republic decide to accredit Jyrki Pulkkinen, Ambassador to Abuja, Nigeria, to represent Finland also in Benin, Laura Torvinen, Ambassador to Maputo, Mozambique, to represent Finland in Swaziland and Tarja Fernández, Ambassador to Beirut, Lebanon, to represent Finland in Jordan.
